Sunday, Sept. 10 - Departure from USA
Monday, Sept. 11– Arrival Palermo Airport. Private Transfer to Castellammare Del Golfo to check into your B & B where your will be served a light lunch. In the late afternoon, you will enjoy a panoramic tour of the Village and will have a special welcome dinner. (L,D)
Tuesday, Sept. 12 – This morning we will have breakfast at Bar Millennium “the best cappuccino and espresso” a small bar where local Sicilians go every morning. Soon after we will head for Cefalu’ famous for its Norman Cathedral, a World Heritage Site. The Norman Cathedral is dramatically situated in front of the mountain (Rocca di Cefalu`) and is one of Sicily’s most important buildings from the Norman domination of the Island. It was Roger II who started the construction in 1131 but was still unfinished at the time of his death in 1154, it was not consecrated until 1267. After a guided tour of the town, participants will have some free time to explore the village and do some shopping. On the way back to Castellammare we will stop in the picturesque town of Mondello. Wednesday, Sept. 13 – Breakfast and a free day at leisurely to enjoy the pool or the lovely sandy beach. Time at leisure or optional participation in a ‘fresh pasta making and cooking class’ you will be to prepare and eat some of the most genuine and traditional Sicilian dishes. Thursday, Sept. 14 –
An early wake up, a quick cup of coffee and on the bus by 8:00 am to Salemi to visit a dairy farm, hopefully on time to see the milking of the sheep. We will visit the factory and witness the various steps of the transformation of milk into ricotta and then to cheese. Saturday, Sept. 16 – After breakfast at the residence, we will have an early departure to Monreale for a guided tour of the Cathedral. You will have some free time to sit in one of the many nearby bars for coffee, cappuccino or a glass of local wine before heading to Palermo, for a guided tour of the Capital of Sicily. Our tour guide will take us to Quattro Canti, the Palace of the Normans with its superb Palatine Chapel, the Cathedral and many other import highlights points of the city. One of the legacies of Palermo’s past as a commercial center that continues to manifest itself in the present day is the Palermo market culture. In particular, Palermo’s Muslim history has made an imprint on the bazaars and markets of the town. Bustling, crowded, and full of all kinds of treasures, a stop at the “Il Capo” market is a unique way to connect with the real lifestyle of the Palermo locals. You will have a chance to savor Sicilian Specialties in one of the Focaccerie inside the Market. We will have dinner in a restaurant specializing in Sicilian dishes on the way back to Castellammare for overnight. (B, D).
Sunday, Sept. 17 – Full day excursion to beautiful beach of San Vito LoCapo. Return to Castellammare for Dinner and overnight (B, D)
Monday, Sept. 18 – After breakfast, check out and departure for Marina di Ragusa. Along the way we will stop in Agrigento to visit the Valley of the Temples, which represent the most beautiful example of Greek civilization in Sicily. Arrival and check in at Hotel. Dinner and overnight at hotel. (B, D)
Tuesday, Sept. 19– This morning after breakfast, we will enjoy a guided tour of the lovely towns of Ragusa and Modica. Ragusa is classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the south-eastern Sicily towns with the highest concentration of cultural heritage. After the earthquake of 1693, on the ruins of the medieval village the city was rebuilt. Modica is an attractive historic town renowned for Barocco Architecture and chocolate making and is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Return to hotel for Dinner and overnight. (B, D)
Wednesday, Sept. 20 – Breakfast at the Hotel followed by a guide tour of Noto and Scicli. Both cities, recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, are famous for their many Baroque Style buildings. Return to hotel for Dinner and overnight. (B, D)
Thursday, Sept. 21 – Breakfast. Departure from hotel for a full day guided tour of Syracuse, a window into the ancient history of theMediterranean and Europe. Its vast archeological site, on the edge of the modern city, is a rare treasure of temples, amphitheaters and the island of Ortigia is a labyrinth of charming ancient and medieval streets. Overnight and dinner in Acitrezza.
Friday, Sept. 22 – Check out from the Hotel and departure for Taormina. Spectacularly perched on the side of a mountain, Taormina is one of Sicily’s most popular summer destination with a stunning ancient Theatre and breathtaking vistas. Our next stop will be at the Silvester Crater in Mt. Etna. We will get to Castellammare in the early evening hours for dinner and overnight.
Saturday, Sept. 23 – Day at Leisure. Today you can relax by the pool, enjoy the beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea and pack your luggage for your flight back home.
Sunday, Sept. 24 – Transfer from residence to Palermo Airport
